Work With Us

Work with Kim Moldofsky, The Maker Mom

Hi, I’m Kim Moldofsky. I’ve been a factory worker and a social worker, a dolphin trainer, corporate trainer, and a potty trainer. I eventually focused on a career as a freelance writer, PR and social media consultant. Nobody asks these days but for the record, I have a Bachelor’s degree (UT Austin), a Master’s degree (Spertus College), and a Ducktorate in Management (Disney University). I love helping small companies and large organizations shape their branding, messaging, and campaigns. I also take great pride in coaching entrepreneurs as they build their businesses.

In addition to hiring me for any of the roles above (content creation, PR, branding, coaching), I also work with companies to develop sponsored content and ad campaigns on The Maker Mom site, in its newsletter, and through its companion site, STEM Kids Chicago. From media appearances to event hosting to a range of advertorial options, I’ve got options for you. Drop me a note at Contact me at TheMakerMom {at} hotmail {dot} com.

In 2016-17 was part of the launch team of mHUB, Chicago’s exciting new innovation center for physical product development and manufacturing, where I managed social media, wrote press releases, and developed website content. Now, I’m an mHUB member and their Maker Mom-in-Residence.  In fact, I was part of the team that planned an awesome STEM Stars event for girls in August of 2017.

In addition to making things at mHUB (laser cut key chains, custom fidget spinners, and a chocolate mold, among other items), I make magic. For example, I was part of an energetic team that planned this awesome STEM Stars event for girls in August of 2017.

As a blogger, I’ve worked with brands in a variety of roles- ambassador, consultant, speaker, content provider, digital correspondent, Twitter party organizer or panelist, and event planner. I’m also the founder of #STEMchat, a popular monthly Twitter chat that had a healthy 4-year run. It brought parents, educators and STEM professionals together to share ideas and resources raising STEM kids while creating millions of impressions for sponsors.

As The Maker Mom, I’ve worked with:

  • Dawn
  • Texas Instruments (5 years)
  • Lenovo
  • National Geographic Kids
  • Chicago Public Library
  • Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge
  • Dell
  • littleBits
  • PBS’ Design Squad
  • Sylvan Learning Centers
  • Engineer’s Week Foundation
  • General Motors
  • Bedtime Math Foundation
  • DiscoverE
  • Georgia-Pacific
  • MAKE magazine
  • TheAlcoholTalk.com
  • PURELL Hand Sanitizer
  • SkillsUSA and Alcoa Foundation
  • Post-it Products

However, over the course of my blogging career I’ve also worked with Kleenex, Leap Frog, ConAgra Foods, Kenmore (Sears), Subaru, Yahoo and others.

In 2015 I started writing for the Discovery Education’s Young Scientist Challenge blog. In recent years I’ve also contributed to The Alcohol Talk’s blog aimed at parents of tweens and teens. In 2013-14, I wrote monthly posts for Sylvan Learning’s parent blog, and served as managing editor of and contributor to Bedtime Math’s parent blog, Add It Up.

I plan events like this.

I’ve written for some of the most popular online parenting destinations such as BabyCenter’s Momformation blog and was quoted in Huffington Post’s Complete Guide to Blogging and The New York Times. I’ve spoken on Capitol Hill as well as at many popular women’s blogging conferences, including Blissdom, Blogalicious, Type-A Mom, and Bloggy Boot Camp Chicago.

I make regular appearances on WGN Morning News, a Chicago broadcast that’s syndicated throughout North America.

  • July 2012 Summer Science Fun
  • November 2012 Hot  holiday tech gifts for kids
  • April 2013 National Robotics Week (featuring my VEX Robotics team!)
  • December 2013 Best STEM gifts for kids
  • November 2014 Top STEM gifts for kids
  • July 2015 Summer Science Fun (as part of my work with GOJO/PURELL Hand Sanitizer)

Maker Mom speaking engagements include:

  • Morton Grove Library How-To Fest 2014
  • Scratch Day Chicago 2014
  • Scratch Day Chicago 2013
  • American Library Association Pre-Conference Event 2013
  • Appearances at local events like farmer’s markets

My YouTube Channel has 450+ subscribers and receives roughly 6,000 views each month. To date, my  100+ videos have more than half a million views. I’m hoping to build out my series, When geeks grow up. My dream video or podcast project, Mothers of Inventors, involves interviewing mothers of well-known geeks, i.e., Mark Zuckerberg’s mom or the mom of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos or Adafruit’s Limor Fried. If you’d like to sponsor either one, or work with me on a Life List item, drop me a note.
