Future City is an engaging engineering competition for middle school students. It's one of the most affordable STEM team competitions around and has a low barrier to entry. I attended the Future City finals in Washington, D.C. a couple of years ago to provide social media coverage. I was impressed by what I learned and the people I met--students, teachers and engineers. It's a powerful STEM learning opportunity, especially this year! Yes, the ... [ Read More ]
Meet Sarah Mihm for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day
On behalf of DiscoverE, sponsor of this post, I’m delighted to introduce you to Sarah Mihm, an engineering student at the University of Iowa. Sarah is spending this Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (Girl Day) on a boat-she’s studying abroad doing the Semester at Sea program. The Candy Construction Challenge is super easy and provides many ways to learn and play. And it's a fun way to prevent the summer slide. The idea is to have kids explore math and engineering concepts with toothpicks and candy. I'll share a few of my favorite ways to play. ... [ Read More ]

Meet The Robot Lady, Kathy Moseler: It’s STEM Girl Friday!
Kathy Moseler, AKA The Robot Lady, is president of Paradise Robotics, a Chicago-area robotics retailer that specializes in helping educators improve their STEM offerings. You can find her on Twitter as @TheRobotLady. As you are likely aware, women are underrepresented engineering these days. What was it like when you earned your engineering degrees in the 1980s? I'm glad you asked this, it's very sad to say it was not much different in the ... [ Read More ]
