3M Young Scientist Challenge – Entry Period Extended!

May 6, 2022 By Kim

3M Young Scientist Challenge -apply todayExciting news: the 3M Young Scientist Challenge in partnership with Discovery Education has extended the deadline to May 16, 2022! This means there’s still time for your 5-8th grader to enter our nation’s leading science competition for young students.

The How is easy, so let me get to that first.

How to Enter the 3M 2022 Young Scientist Challenge

All it takes to enter is a 1-2 minute video that outlines an original solution to an everyday problem. This year’s Big Question is, How can you improve lives for the future?

Entries need to address improving lives in one of these categories:

  • Health
  • Safety
  • Mobility
  • Environment
  • Energy Consumption
  • Community

The 3M Young Scientist Lab website provides plenty of prompts and past examples to help your child brainstorm solutions.

Great STEM Opportunity for Homeschool Students

One of the aspects that makes this competition so great for homeschoolers is that your child doesn’t need a fully-outfitted lab or dramatic setting to state their case. They just need a 1-2 minute video that effectively communicates their creativity, scientific knowledge, and persuasiveness.

Why Enter the 3M Young Scientist Challenge?

First off, hands-on activities and project-based learning are great ways to foster an appreciation for exploration and innovative thinking. But let’s be real, this competition offers life-changing opportunities.

Your child is sure to appreciate the title of America’s Top Young Scientist and all of the media opportunities that come with it, but they’ll also receive a $25,000 prize that will come in handy when it’s time for college.

But the biggest benefit, one that might not be top-of-mind for a 10-year-old, is the chance to work with a 3M scientist mentor for several months. All 10 of the finalists will enjoy this amazing opportunity.

There are also opportunities for prizes and recognition at the state level and for each grade level, as well. You can see the full list here.

2022 Young Scientist Challenge Entries Due by 8 PM Eastern May 16th, 2022!

What are you waiting for? Go enter today!
