Through my involvement with the National Geographic Kids Insider program, I got the chance to see their new science book hot off the press and now I’m giving you a chance to win a copy of your own. The book, Try This!: 50 Fun Experiments for the Mad Scientist in You (affiliate link), By Karen Romano Young is described as an invitation to play around, make a mess, and spring surprises on others.
Sounds right up my alley.
Try This! is filled with ideas that can be refined for science fairs or simply done at home in the name of science fun. It’s broken down into several sections:
- Bugs and Microbes
- People and Other Animals
- Things Water Does
- Weird Physics
Additional material includes quizzes, facts, science fair tips and tie-ins with science education standards.
As a National Geographic book, it’s no surprise that there are loads of photographs. The photos provide guidance for implementing the experiments. They also tell an important story–anyone can be a scientist. National Geographic Kids gets major props for taking care to feature boys and girls from a range of ethnic backgrounds engaged in science fun.
As with the NG Kids 2015 Almanac, though, the bright photos and colorful graphics can be distracting. And if you’re over age 40, some of the print is hard to read–all the more reason to let your kids loose with this book, right? However, you will want to be on hand to supervise the experiments involving electricity, flames, and power tools, among others.
This book is especially fun for kids with an adventurous spirit who are not necessarily science-minded. Try This! wins hearts and minds–science is fun! Science is cool!
And with 50 experiments, you can choose one for your family to do each week of the year, with time off for a two-week winter break.
The Young Maker Teen and I did the “Dry Penny” experiment and then, as seen below, riffed on it without the penny, simply enjoying the suction vacuums he was creating and adapting variables to see how he could create the best vacuum (and capture it on video).
