After yesterday’s post on dying Easter eggs in shaving cream, my friend asked if I thought it was safe to eat the eggs dyed using the super-easy, mess-free method. My guess is no, it’s not safe; don’t eat them. Try your luck on some “mystery Peeps” (who comes up with this stuff?) instead.
You shouldn’t eat eggs that have been used in an egg hunt, nor eggs that have been sitting out (even in a nice, relatively sterile) display for more than two hours. Also, if you use shaving cream or other materials that are not food-safe, don’t eat the eggs. It’s not worth the risk.
If you want edible eggs, substitute whipped cream or Cool Whip for shaving cream and let the eggs sit overnight in the fridge while the color seeps in. Those eggs would be safe to eat. Let me know if you try this.

Thanks, Kim. I figured as much. I think the egg shells might be semi-porous. That is a really nice method for blown eggs, though. Better than having water seeping into the holes and have to blow everything out all over again!
I used cool whip instead of shaving cream and they came out just as well.
And then they are safe to eat as well!
